You know your fellow beings, but you see, so do we – and they still surprise us. People are incorrigible; they often live in a fantasy world that allows them to escape the harsh reality that is, admittedly, quite disappointing. Spiritual life, real in its principle, is beyond them in many ways. They ask for favours or miracles; even the well-informed fall into this inclination towards ease, which is inherent in humans.

They believe that a spiritual Master can solve and change everything in this world, including their personal disappointments. How can they be made more alert, more open to the reality of an incarnation? Spiritual practice elevates the soul, but it does not necessarily carry one into Wonderland. You can see believers from all faiths constantly asking for help for everything, but less often for their spiritual elevation. The abhyasi who is the most convinced and regular in his commitment is nonetheless human. This should be meditated upon.
